Toivola Volunteer Fire Department
41095 Church Rd, Toivola, MI 49965
Toivola Volunteer Fire
Department was organized in the spring of 1978 with
22 men on the roster. There are currently 18 members
with two trained as first responders and are members
of Adams Township First responders, which cover
first responder medical needs in the area. The
original fire protection area was the Toivola area
which consisted of Stanton Township precinct II, the
Misery Bay area of Bohemia Township in Ontonagon
County and the Toivola area of Adams Township.
Initial response in the Adams Township area is now
covered by Adams Township Fire and First Responders.
The protection area includes 55 square miles of
Stanton Township and 26 square miles in Bohemia
township. They have mutual aid agreements in place
with surrounding fire departments.
For many
years operating costs were covered by fundraising
and donations, with some funding from the townships.
The fundraising included pancake and French toast
breakfasts and a summer fun day at Agate Beach with
games and raffles. In recent years, operating costs
are covered by the Township fire protection millage
and miscellaneous grants.
Community
activities include the bonfire at Agate Beach
celebrating the beginning of summer in June, and
spring roadside garbage cleanup. This includes 28
miles of roads in the Toivola area that gets the
garbage picked up from irresponsible polluters.
